Our directions

evaluate...build...promote...improve...evaluate...build...promote...improve...evaluate...build...promote...

The Commission’s corporate plan provides direction to our work with clients and stakeholders. The plan sets out our strategic business priorities for 2005–06. It provides the basis for our business planning and resource allocation, and for managing and accounting for our performance.

There are increasing expectations that we will make a more substantial contribution to debates on the directions of further public service reform. We will be setting more of our evaluation work within this broader framework, including analysis in the State of the Service Report. Our capability development role is evolving towards a wider, more action-oriented capacity building focus, including consideration of performance, governance, policy and practices, and culture, while continuing our strong focus on skills development.

The directions of our work can now be summarised as:

  • evaluation set within a framework of continuous public administration reform, promoting better practice and benchmarking achievements
  • building the future capability of the APS
  • fostering a sustainable, contemporary and vital public service.

Our resourcing remains tight and we are cutting back on some activities and reducing our efforts in some areas in order to balance our work programme and deliver on our top priorities to:

  • foster Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment in the APS
  • build leadership capability
  • review the Public Service Act.

We are continuing to invest in developing our capability and strengthening our performance to effectively support our evolving role and work programme.

Signature - Lynelle Briggs, Public Service Commissioner

June 2005
