Appendix J : Ecologically sustainable development and environmental market performance

The Commission is committed to practices that assist ecologically sustainable development and improve environmental performance. The Commission does not administer any legislation or have any appropriations directly related to these issues, and, accordingly, the Commission’s involvement relates to practices that can improve energy management and environmental practices within Commission workplaces.

The Commission has in place an Environmental Management System (EMS) for the central office in Canberra. The Commission has begun work on reviewing and incorporating, where economically and operationally viable, the recommendations and best practice processes of the EMS in Canberra and, in some instances, across all its state offices.

The EMS will provide a system that will assist the Commission in its effort to improve its energy consumption levels, and environmental and operational performance by continuously reviewing and monitoring its processes and/or activities. Currently, the Commission has in place:

  • a practice of ensuring that where operationally viable energy efficient equipment is purchased
  • paper recycling arrangements
  • basic education program that advertises energy efficient and environmentally friendly practices.

The Commission is somewhat constrained in its ability to initiate systems improvements in its regional offices where it is a minor tenant in leased premises.
