Commission support for PNG
Peter Miller, Acting Group Manager Policy and Employment meeting with
Jerry Tetaga, Chairman, Public Services Commission in Papua New Guinea
In June 2003 the Commission commenced a significant program of assistance to the Public Service
Commission (PSC) and the Department of Personnel Management (DPM) in Papua New Guinea as part
of the Australian Governments program of support for public sector reform in the region.
Under an agreement with AusAID, the Commission prepared a report that identified specific
areas where we might offer technical assistance to the PSC and DPM.
During the year, two contractors were engaged to provide this assistance to the PSC. The
work is continuing, but preliminary reports suggest the assistance has been well received
and that action is being taken to implement the recommended changes.
Through this work, good working relations have been developed between Australian officials
and their counterparts in PNG. The Commissions knowledge and understanding of the operations
of the PNG Public Service has also been enhanced.
