I then went to study an Associate Diploma at the Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music (CASM), at Adelaide University for three years. During this time I found that I really enjoyed the full-time student lifestyle, which was supplemented by playing in bands. After leaving university, I continued to develop my skills and knowledge by studying several Certificates in Community Services and Community Management at TAFE. I returned to the public service in 2001, and worked as a Customer Service Officer in the ABSTUDY Unit in Adelaide before it was relocated to Palmerston in the Northern Territory in 2004. Fate led me to the Indigenous Education Unit in the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) in Adelaide, two weeks before the SA ABSTUDY Unit closed its doors. I worked in DEST as a Senior Education Officer for two years, managing funding contracts with schools in Adelaide’s northern suburbs and the Yorke Peninsula, before accepting a transfer to a mainstream position in the same Department. I currently work in that same Department, although the name recently changed to the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, due to Machinery of Government changes. I am now a Team Leader in the Communications Team, responsible for writing ministerial responses for the National Program Manager and the Deputy Prime Minister. I also still perform in a successful Aboriginal Reggae band, so if I don’t see you at one of our IAPSEN forums, I might catch you at one of our shows. |
