Floyd Churnside

Floyd ChurnsideG’day - My name is Floyd Churnside. I was born in Perth, and raised in the Kimberley and Pilbara areas..  I am a Nyul Nyul man (Beagle Bay area) from my Mother’s side and from my Father’s side I am Ngarluma (Roebourne area).  Although my Father is buried in Roebourne WA, my home town is Derby where my Mother and younger siblings reside.  I am the eldest of five; I have three sisters and a brother.  My youngest sister and brother are parents and so it’s always great see my nephews and nieces.

I work for the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) as a Project Officer.  Although I have seen many name changes in DEEWR over the past twelve years I must say that I have gained a lot of experience and knowledge and have been fortunate to meet a lot of interesting people through my job.  I am mainly involved in the Indigenous Education area where I have seen some great work done regarding the importance of obtaining a good education, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and leading a good life.

Previous to my current job I worked as a Community Based Trainer providing education and awareness workshops on Indigenous family and domestic violence. I worked alongside a female colleague and together we would deliver workshops for men and women separately about curbing the incidences of family and domestic violence.  Previous to this I worked as an Aboriginal Teaching Assistant at Holy Rosary School Derby for several years.

Throughout my career, I have learnt that both employment and education can only enhance the lifestyle of Aboriginal people in the in the future.  I would like to see more Indigenous people working everywhere and in particular, the public sector—the more the merrier!
