Lee Smallwood

Hi, my name is Lee Smallwood and I am based on Townsville.  I am a descendant of the Birri-Gubba people on my fathers side and Gureng-Gureng on my mothers side.

I have been an active employee of the APS for about nine years.

Currently I am employed as an Indigenous Liaison Officer with Department of Defence based at Lavarack Barracks Townsville. I manage a program called Indigenous Participation Program.  The primary focus of the IPP is to identify and remove the barriers to Indigenous youths to participate in the Australian Defence Force Cadets

The region I manage extends from the Torres Straits, across to Mount ISA and down through to Rockhampton.  I also liaise between the three Defence services and the Indigenous community on issues relevant to the Australian Defence Force.

I am an active member of supporting APSC programs to increasing Indigenous employment within the Department of Defence though the IASPEN network.  Through my work, I also work along side two other APSC Indigenous network members based here in Townsville. 

I also mentor several Indigenous employees currently working within Department of Defence. 

I look forward to continuing to supporting the IASPEN network and encouraging more Indigenous people to think about a career in the APS.
