Welcome to Public Calling - APS Indigenous careers The Australian Government is committed to increasing the representation of Indigenous Australians in the Australian Public Service (APS) workforce, both in mainstream and Indigenous areas. The cultural diversity and different perspectives that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees bring to their workplaces are greatly valued in the APS. The Australian Public Service Commission supports the recruitment, development and career progression of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the APS by implementing Public Calling – The APS Indigenous Employment Strategy. From this page you can find out information on gaining employment, or if you already work in the APS, the support that is available to you to manage and develop your career as a Commonwealth Public Servant and initiatives to support Indigenous staff you manage. |

Indigenous Australian Public Service Careers:
What is the Australian Public Service (APS)?
The APS is the federal public service and consists of a large number of organisations, each focusing on specific areas like communication, defence, finance, environment, education and training, health and community services, workplace relations, immigration, science, tourism, transport and so on. In addition, there are also a range of statutory and executive agencies that work on issues at the national level.
We work at the national level of government and are separate from state, territory and local government organisations. Our workplaces are characterised by professionalism, diversity, learning opportunities and family-friendly cultures.
The APS is at the forefront of shaping the future for Australia and you can be part of it. The work is diverse and careers include more than just working in policy and programs, or being in an office. Behind almost every part of life in Australia is an APS job.
So how can you join the APS?
You don’t always need specific work experience or formal qualifications to be in the running for a public service job. You may not have done that exact type of job before but you may have the skills required. Employers are looking for people who have general life experience and are enthusiastic, reliable, good communicators and willing to learn.
