International Women's Day
In 1910 an international conference of women voted to hold a yearly International Women’s Day, the first of which was on 19 March 1911. This rally was motivated by a protest held in New York in 1908, organised by the Women’s Social and Political Union to rebel against poor working conditions and child labour. The women wore the colours of green (hope and new life), violet (dignity and self respect) and white (purity).
IWD is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women in the past, present and future. It is a day when women are recognised for their achievements, regardless of divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.
Events are being held in:
Brisbane - 7 March 2012
Join us in welcoming Ruth Larwill’s return from Phnom Penh to her home town of Brisbane and hear about the transformational work being performed to change the lives of women.
Guest Speaker—Nikki Bart
Nikki Bart and her mother Cheryl Bart are the fi rst-ever motherdaughter team to summit the world’s tallest mountain, Mt Everest. Upon reaching the top, they also became the fi rst mother-daughter duo to complete the Seven Summits; climbing the highest peak of every continent in the world. In 2008, they were the recipients of the Australian Geographic Spirit of Adventure Award.
Nikki is also a doctor, and a recipient of the prestigious Sir John Monash Scholarship Award. This is the Australian equivalent of a Rhodes scholarship and aims to foster the next generation of Australian leaders. Nikki intends on using this scholarship to study hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation with the view to understanding the process of shock in intensive care and emergency patients. She will be working with the Centre for Altitude, Space and Extreme Environment Medicine and recieve her degree from Oxford University. Over the past few years Nikki has been involved in numerous developing world health initiatives, and has volunteered in Guatamala and Costa Rica as well as rural Australia. Melbourne - 5 March 2012
To celebrate International Women's Day (IWD) 2012, the Australian Public Service Commission is partnering with UN Women to host a special breakfast event in Melbourne. In previous years UN Women and the Australian Public Service Commission have held separate IWD events. This year we are excited to be able to work in collaboration to hold a single event that will be attended by representatives of government, not-for-profit, educational, and private sector organisations.
This breakfast provides an opportunity for us to reflect on what we have achieved and the challenges still ahead, as we strive for gender equality. We are seeking the support of APS agencies in Victoria to contribute to the success of this event. We encourage APS leaders to use this opportunity to reward and recognise teams and to reflect on the achievements and challenges facing women globally.
The theme of the event is ‘Empower Women, Empower a Nation’.
