Introduction to the world of public policy
This program explores what it means to be a policy professional by considering what ‘policy’ means, its essential role as part of a well functioning democracy, the demands that are placed on policy professionals and the expected values, standards and skills.
Program overview
- examine Australian public policy exemplars with reference to private sector and overseas models
- examine public policy in practice with a presentation from a current SES policy practitioner
- find out what Ministers really want by way of policy services, and the balancing of various needs, expectations, rights and demands
- explore the relationship between department and agency responsibilities and the need for a ‘whole of government’ approach to public policy
Participant benefits
- develop a clear understanding of policy and good practice
- gain an understanding of the policy environment
- develop and/or enhance a range of practical policy skills
- be able to identify ways and means of improving policy skills and the content of policy advice
- increase and strengthen your confidence in delivering policy advice
