Legislation and APS decision-making
As an APS employee you have an obligation to consistently behave in an honest, ethical and professional manner. This program details the legislative framework underpinning the APS, including the responsibilities of working with colleagues and clients and the scope of relevant administrative law on your decisions and processes.
Program overview
- recognising the relationship between the Public Service Act 1999 and the APS Values and Code of Conduct
- exploring the APS legislative framework, including the framework of the Australian Government, decision making in departments and agencies, and interpreting and applying legislation through case studies
- recognising the responsibilities of working with colleagues and clients, including the impact of the Privacy Act 1988
- recognising the scope of the APS decision making (administrative law) framework, including the Ombudsman Act 1976 and the Freedom of Information Act 1982
Participant benefits
- develop an appreciation of the APS accountability and governance framework
- gain skills in researching and interpreting legislation
- identify the need for fairness and professionalism in dealing with colleagues and clients
- gain an overview of relevant administrative law and how the legislation informs your daily decision making in the APS
