Editing and proofreading
Editing and proofreading is a craft. This highly interactive program will help participants to transform a draft into a polished document. Participants will also enhance their writing skills as a result of their newly acquired editing and proofreading skills. And they will acquire the ability to provide meaningful feedback to drafters, not only on the ‘what’ that needs to be changed but also on the ‘why’ those changes need to be made.
Program overview
- document structure: conceptual unity; issues identified and addressed; the scope and organisation of the document; logical flow of information
- language and style: word choice and usage; clear and concise expressions; relevant and consistent style and tone; avoiding grammatical mistakes and eliminating ambiguity
- document presentation - conforming to design specifications, including: templates; heading hierarchies; running headers and footers; footnotes and endnotes; file references; tables, graphs and illustrations; language consistency; spelling; use of numerals, numbers and figures; punctuation, including hyphenation and capitalisation
- document readability: assessing the readability of a document – the Gunning Fog Index
Participant benefits
- guide initial drafters on the content, format and structure of documents, correcting errors and inconsistencies and demonstrate how to produce documents that enhance the image of the organisation
- help readers to understand the document by using clear and correct expression; adopting the appropriate style and tone; and reviewing the document from the reader’s point of view
- edit a document to ensure that it is clear, concise, correct, addresses complex issues and conforms to established guidelines and protocols
Who should attend
SES, EL 1 & 2, and certain APS 5–6 who fulfil a specific proofreading and editing role.
