Stage 2: Notification and acceptance of applications

Step 6. Notify the employment opportunity

If it is possible that promotion or engagement will be the outcome of a selection process, the employment opportunity must have been notified in the Gazette.

If the employment outcome is assignment of duties at a similar or lower level, Gazette notification of the employment opportunity is not required by the legislation. However, the policies of an individual agency might impose notification requirements for opportunities within that agency.

For details of the legislative requirements of Gazette notification, see Stage 1 step 4 and Appendix C.

Agencies also need to consider the content of Gazette notifications and other advertisements in order to attract a field of suitable applicants and to minimise the number of unsuitable applicants.

Essential qualifications and conditions of engagement

It is recommended that as far as possible agency requirements relating to essential qualifications and conditions of engagement should be referred to in the Gazette notification of the employment opportunity and in any additional advertising. Additional detail should be included in any selection documentation provided to candidates. See step 3, earlier in this chapter.
