Briefing APS Decision Makers & Ministers
Program Overview
The capacity to provide timely, compelling and concise advice to inform senior Australian Public Service (APS) decision makers and ministers is a vital capability for high-performing public service leaders. This program provides an active experiential learning environment for public service leaders wanting to hone briefing skills and establish productive relations with decision makers.
The program focuses on decision making and covers the skills required to design, develop and deliver a briefing to get a decision. This program will appeal to those charged with preparing briefs in different contexts within and beyond the APS. It will cover the development and role of question time briefs, ministerial talking points for media engagements, ministerial advisor briefings, hot issues briefing, ministerial submissions and second reading speeches. It will also cover best practice across this range.
Based on adult learning techniques, the program involves participants in ‘real-life’ briefing scenarios that simulate the high-pressure and stakes of a Government briefing. Participants will be introduced to effective briefing techniques and be able to workshop approaches that enhance relationships with senior APS decision makers, ministers and advisers.
