size of agencies

The 10 agencies listed in Table A accounted for about three-quarters of total APS staff (ongoing and non-ongoing) at June 2004. The ranking of the three largest agencies has remained unchanged for the last five years. Staff increases in the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs mean that it is now ranked fifth, and reductions in the Australian Customs Service mean that it is now ranked seventh, behind the Department of Family and Community Services. The rankings of the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Department of Industry Tourism and Resources have inverted as a result of staff losses in the former and gains in the latter.
