AGGP application processes vary slightly depending on which stream you apply for. We’ve put together our top tips to help you get started on your application.
Start early
You will need to get some key documents and information together in order to be able to finish your application. Depending on your stream, this can include:
- your personal details
- work and education history (including your resume)
- academic transcript
- proof of citizenship
- written response
- multiple choice questions
Filling out the application can take up to 1.5 hours, but getting all these documents together can take a lot longer especially if you need to request new copies of documents like birth certificates and academic transcripts. We recommend starting your application early so you have enough time to complete the entire application – including preparing all this information.
Read the application pack
You should read your stream’s application pack carefully to find out what you need to do. The most common mistake we see applicants make is not reading the application questions or requirements correctly.
Prepare your written response separately
If a written response is required, prepare it in a separate Word document first. You can copy it into the form when you have finished. This means you can write and edit your response at your own pace, and makes sure any edits are saved. It also makes proofreading for spelling and grammar errors much easier – because we also assess your written communication skills.
Write your application for the assessment criteria
We recruit graduates for many different areas of government. This means we want to know why you would make a great public servant overall. The best way to demonstrate this is to write your application for our selection criteria.
Each stream has their own criteria. Generally, focus your application on why you want to work in the public service and your specified stream. We want to know how you demonstrate the important public service capabilities, including:
- motivation to work in government and the graduate program
- self-awareness
- collaboration and client service
- results-orientation and adaptability
- research and analytical skills
- verbal and written communication
More information about selection criteria can be found in each stream’s candidate information pack.
