First of all, what is the APS HR School Leaver Program?
The APS HR School Leaver Program is a 12-month pilot program which provides a new entry pathway into the APS for recent school leavers. The pilot program will start with an admission of 25 school leavers in 2022. Successful applicants will be placed across 12 participating agencies in Canberra, Sydney and Adelaide with a view to grow the program countrywide in coming years.
Participants will have structured on-the-job and corporate training while undertaking a Certificate IV in Human Resource Management. They will be placed in a supportive team environment with an inclusive and diverse workplace culture, a competitive salary (APS Level 1) and opportunities for advancement into ongoing APS2 positions.
They will support and undertake a range of HR-related routine, technical and administrative tasks, with the support and guidance of senior employees. Some of the daily tasks may include undertaking recruitment activities, processing payroll, organising training and managing employee records.
What’s the purpose of the program?
The program is part of the APS HR Professional Stream’s capability building initiative, focusing on creating new ways to identify emerging HR talent.
Participants of the program will not only be encouraged to continue their studies, but also have access to invaluable training and mentoring as they take their first step into a HR career in the Australian Public Service.
Why this program?
By targeting school leavers interested in a career in HR, the profession has the chance to encourage and grow our future HR workforce and leaders from their first days in the APS. By building the general skills required for a corporate role alongside core HR skills, we have a unique opportunity to help jumpstart the careers of a new cohort of HR professionals.
How are other agencies embracing the program?
The Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources is excited to be part of the pilot program in 2022. Their message to interested school leavers is:
‘Do you want to work in People Branch as one of the first APS HR School Leaver participants? At the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources you could work directly with a number of people across Australia to support their recruitment, learning and development, performance capability and/or diversity. As a HR School Leaver, you could be involved in processing job offers, coordinating events for staff and helping us showcase the diverse work we do for thousands of people. Additionally, you will have the support to see you succeed, and the skills you will develop over the course of the program will stay with you for your entire working career!’
How can you become involved?
If your agency isn’t already involved, interest in the program is welcome for 2023.
