Assistant Minister for the Public Service, the Hon Patrick Gorman MP officially opened the APS Academy Campus in Townsville on 27 October. This is delivered in partnership by the Australian Public Service Commission and James Cook University, where the campus is located.
Head of the APS Academy, Dr Subho Banerjee joined Minister Gorman and University dignitaries in welcoming the campus’s first participants. It was an opportunity to speak candidly with the cadets and hear about their experiences and aspirations as they embark on their APS careers.
The campus makes it possible for Australians in the Townsville region to pursue APS employment while completing their studies, without having to relocate to a major centre. This is part of the Australian Government’s plan for addressing data and digital skills shortages, through opportunities for regional Australians.
The campus offers APS agencies and departments a new and innovative way for addressing these shortages, consistently reported to be the largest and most critical skills shortages across the APS. A number of agencies are already participating, using this avenue to build their talent pipelines. They are leading the way for the APS and investing to position our workforce for the future.
