Hello from the Data Profession team at the ABS.
We are well into 2022 and now have 26 agencies supporting the profession as project leads or engaged users of our work. The Data Profession is committed to delivering development options, tools and like-minded engagement to build and retain data capability and practices across the Australian Public Service.
We are excited to share that we are building an online membership platform just for you! Here you will be able to join communities of practice, seek out resources helpful to your work, learn from like minded data professionals, and find out about short cross-agency immersions to develop specific data capabilities on the job. More to come on this in the following months.
Later this year the profession will be showing you where and how to best develop (or refresh) your foundational data literacy capabilities. For data specialists, keep an eye out for curated learning to support your career development and to broaden our workforce skills across these critical capabilities. Finally, for our Senior Leaders who aren’t in data specific roles, the Data Profession is also supporting you, offering some great data leadership development opportunities later in the year.
This edition has special articles to demonstrate the variety of data driven careers. We hear from Marek Rucinski at the ATO, Phillip O’Connor on innovative projects improving the data system (who also supports immersive learning through cross-agency mobility), and how agencies take a strategic and proactive approach to developing and securing their data environment and data governance with Richard Bullock at ACMA. We highlight the Data Capability Framework Community of Practice to help agencies using the framework for capability benchmarking and learning pathway development, and we encourage all our data professionals to delve into the back catalogue of the Data Professional Technical Forum.
We hope you enjoy this newsletter. Don't forget to let us know about any projects, news, or opportunities you would like to share with colleagues through the Data Profession News. Please send any feedback or ideas to data.profession@abs.gov.au
Best wishes,
