Career opportunities and new experiences
With 189 different organisations across the Commonwealth, we have people around the country doing almost any job you can think of. The opportunities are endless.
Over the past few years, the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) has been keeping a close eye on the APS Employee Census results. These tell us what our people are thinking when it comes to leadership, organisational culture, and career opportunities. A trend the APSC noticed was some parts of mobility across the service could be difficult. The Census results said:
- in 2020, 62% of employees who took a move reported that they found out about the opportunity through word of mouth
- in 2021, 21% of employees reported that they didn’t know how to find out about specific opportunities.
With this information, and the launch of the APS Mobility Framework last year, the APSC has been on a mission to make mobility easier for our people. It recently launched the new mobility jobs board on APSJobs. The mobility jobs board is hosted on our central platform used for all ongoing and non-ongoing APS vacancies, and offers a new section dedicated to temporary opportunities for Commonwealth employees.
Support from APS HR Professionals
As HR professionals we all know the many benefits of mobility opportunities when it comes to developing our people, shifting our resources, and uplifting the capability within our departments. This new function provides the whole of government channel that we were all looking for. In the first 12 weeks since the launch, over 50 departments and agencies have shown their support by using the jobs board. To keep the platform a success we need to keep this momentum going by encouraging the remaining departments and agencies to advertise their temporary roles.
This is where you come in … as the APS HR Professionals providing your expert advice across the service, we need your help! Start those conversations in your department, encourage your business areas to loop you in early when opportunities arise and support them to advertise the roles on the new jobs board.
“HR practitioners can influence SES in discussions about the importance of mobility by reminding them that mobility supports outcomes. Managers are rewarded for delivering outcomes, so executives need to support managers in building the business case for how mobility helps deliver outcomes across the APS.” - Paula Goodwin, Group Executive Enterprise Services, Bureau of Meteorology.
