It’s almost an understatement to say the past two years have reinforced the importance of strategic and operational workforce planning (WFP) in the APS. That’s why continuing to build our strategic WFP skills is essential to ensuring we remain responsive to both the current and future needs of Australians.Thankfully the APS Centre of Excellence for Workforce Planning (the Centre) has been created by the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) to help develop these skills.
Specifically designed to teach, upskill, and assist HR professionals at all levels, the Centre’s approach to building WFP capability (see the above WFP cycle image) has been recognised at an international level. This includes being recommended as best practice by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and providing support to the public service in Samoa and Uruguay.
The Centre delivers its work through a small but diverse team of expert workforce planners and analysts made-up of strategic HR managers, economists, organisational psychologists, financial management and accounting professionals, and data analysts.
With a high level of expertise available, the Centre has something for everyone. Here are some ways you can benefit:
Join the Community
The Centre hosts a Workforce Planning Community of Practice representing 87 APS agencies. It also hosts WFP forums, induction and information sessions, and technical skill workshops. Join the community and build your skills.
Enrol in learning programs
The Centre delivers WFP programs through the APS Academy. Enrolments are now open for the Workforce Planning Start Up Program – programs book out fast, so get in quick.
Use the resources
The Centre houses a digital portal of WFP resources including: the APS workforce planning guide; the APS Job Family Framework; the latest relevant research, data and curated bite-sized learning; WFP case studies; and a WFP news/interaction channel.
Apply insights
The Centre’s expert analysts use APS and whole-of-labour-market datasets to generate strategic WFP insights and develop strategic workforce risk reports.
