Meet Violet, alumni of our Australian Government School Leaver Program. When she finished year 12, she kick-started her career in the Department of Finance.
During her placement, Violet was an AusPol and Visits Assistant located within the COMCAR and Programs Branch, as well as the Ministerial and Parliamentary Services Division.
“As part of my role at the Australian Political Exchange Council (the Council) and Visits Team, I had the opportunity to contribute to the planning of Incoming/Outgoing Delegation programs and Guest of Government Visits. I also got to travel with the delegates to see my work through to delivery and even got the opportunity to assist Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
Reflecting on her involvement in the program, Violet expressed her gratitude for the unlimited opportunities, life experiences, and friendships it provided.
“The program is so useful in shaping your APS career as it gives you a head start straight into the public workforce and, for many people, their first experience at a full-time job. The formal training undertaken in the program assists you in growing your knowledge and confidence in the APS. The program is also a great place to form new friendships, start building your corporate network and maintain an ideal work/life balance.”
With the Australian Government School Leaver Program, you can apply for a job in human resources, a generalist role or both at over 20 participating agencies across Australia. The 12-month career development program provides those who completed year 12 in 2023 or 2024 with a full-time job, competitive salary, and generous leave entitlements and superannuation.

As for Violet, completing the program taught her that her eagerness and drive to complete tasks efficiently and with great detail are her biggest assets.
For those considering applying for the program, here’s Violet’s advice:
“Push yourself outside of your boundaries and be willing to take risks in order to achieve a successful outcome.”
