The Australian Public Service at a glance

APS headcount of 148,736 at 31 December 2020, which is a 2.9% increase from the December 2019 headcount. Ongoing employees make up 88.4% of the APS while non-ongoing employees represent 11.6%. The proportion of non-ongoing employees increased from 10.2% in 2019. During 2020, there was 9,262 ongoing engagements and 7,541 ongoing separations.
The second image shows a bar chart of Age groups. 12.8% of APS employees are under the age of 30, 25.3% are between the age of 30 to 39, 28.8% are between 40 to 49, and 33.1% of APS employees are 50 years old and older.

EL 1 employees 18.5%. EL 2 employees 8.2%. Employees at all SES classifications combined make up 1.9% of the APS.

 

Diversity and Pattern of Work. Indigenous employees make up 3.4% of the APS workforce, a 0.2% drop from 2019. Employees with a disability make up 4.0% of the APS workforce. This is the same proportion as that in 2019. Females make up 59.9% of the APS workforce, a 0.2% increase from 2019. Employees born overseas make up 22.2% of the APS workforce. This is the same proportion as that in 2019.

New South Wales has 26,192 employees or 17.6%. Victoria has 25,263 employees or 17.0%. Queensland has 17,405 employees or 11.7%. South Australia has 9,405 employees or 6.3%. Western Australia has 6,887 employees or 4.6%.
