APS Employment Database interactive interface (APSEDii)
What is APSEDii?
APSEDii stands for the ‘Australian Public Service Employment Database internet interface’. The latest interactive interface is a style presentation of characteristics and movements of the Australian Public Service (APS) workforce.
Where does the data come from?
The data are sourced from the APS Employment Database (APSED). This data comes from agencies’ human resources information systems and includes employee movements such as engagements, promotions, transfers and separations. Agencies routinely provide data to the Australian Public Service Commission in accordance with the requirements outlined in Sections 41 and 44 of the Public Service Act 1999.
APSEDii only reports data on employees covered by the PS Act. Employees in Commonwealth-owned companies, statutory authorities, the Australian Defence Force and government business enterprises who are not employed under the PS Act are not included. State and local government employees are also not included.

This Agency Details dashboard provides details about the whole APS or by agency at 30 June each year from 2005 to 2024. The details provided include the number of employees by classification, educational qualification, age group and the state where employees work. Headcount and percentages are presented for the diversity measures: employees with a disability and for Indigenous employees. The proportion of non-ongoing employees and the proportion of employees working part-time are also provided. This dashboard provides a trend by gender from 2005. All details can be filtered at the agency level for any chosen year as at 30 June.

APS employees by disability status and agency size - 30 June 2024

The Disability Status by Agency Size dashboard provides details about the whole of APS or by agency size for each year from 2005 to 2024. Agency level reporting is not provided to ensure the privacy of all employees, but still enables benchmarking against agencies of a similar size.
Details provided by disability status include the number of employees by classification, educational qualification, age group and the state where the employees work. The proportion of non-ongoing employees and employees working part-time are also provided. This dashboard provides a trend by gender from 2005 to 2024. All details can be filtered by agency size and disability status for any chosen year as at 30 June.
The ability to filter by disability status allows the reader to compare employees who identify as having a disability with those who do not, and employees who choose not to disclose their disability status. The amount of missing data is also relevant as it helps to define the confidence level when using this data for future analysis.
The agency size categories are as follows:
- ‘Extra Small’ - fewer than 100 employees
- ‘Small’ - between 100 and 250 employees
- ‘Medium’ - between 250 and 1000 employees
- ‘Large’ - between 1000 and 10,000 employees
- ‘Extra Large’ - over 10,000 employees
When grouping by agency size, casual employees have not been included.
Machinery of Government movements over the years affect agency size. The agency size is based on headcount at 30 June each year.

Headcount and percentages are presented for the diversity measures: employees with a disability and for Indigenous employees. The proportion of employees engaged part-time is also provided. This dashboard provides a trend in engagements by gender from 2005. All details can be filtered at the agency level for any chosen financial year.
